Abstract:

Inside a 1 kg package with frozen fish in 14 slices from Largehead Hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) from Surinam labelled „Caribbean Pearl Seafrozen Fish“ a total of 7 cyst capsules of an unknown fish parasite where found. The package, frozen at 5.7.2016 was sold in a Frankfurt Asian food speciality store at 13. September 2016. 7 fish slices have been prepared for consume by frying between 14. September and 18. September. From the dishes emerged a total of 6 capsules that first erroneously had been identified as hard seed kernels inside a Chili Sauce added to the fish preparation. The last kernel was found embedded inside the fishs muscle meat. A following radiography analysis with X-raxs of 5 still frozen fish slices from the same package localized one capsule more inside one of the fish slices, situated at the lower margin of the fishs ventral region.

Literature describes Trichiurus lepturus woldwide distributed fish used for human consume. Numerous scientific publications mention „nodulous enlargements of spines“, „pearls“, „otoliths“, „osteomas“, ossifications“ or „hyperostotic pterygiophores“ found inside that carnivorous fish species. The question, if the fish is host of parasite cysts accumulated during food-chain inside the predators body is not widely discussed. A study of the ecology of Trichiurus lepturus, his known parasites and the identification of the found cysts that resemble to Cestoda parasites permanent stages is commenced.

Paralelly the specific data of the production and composition of the found frozen fish package, it´s transport and distribution way and X-ray examination stations for food sanity are determined and collected. The question, why in a single package of fish for human consume a so uncommon high accumulation of parasite cysts was found and if this fact could be consecuence of a previous selective manipulation by collecting parasited fish in a fish-scanning station and re-packaging in the sold boundle, is discussed.
